The Democratic Republic of Congo is hosting its first ever contemporary arts biennial.
Artists from around the world have been invited to show their work in the capital Kinshasa.
The city is home to some of the most prominent artists, including Freddy Tsimba, who sculpts elaborate human bodies with bullets, spoons or bottlecaps.

Event: Du 20 au 28 novembre : Kinshasa s’ouvre sa première biennale d’art contemporain
La ville province de Kinshasa accueille enfin sa première biennale d’art contemporain dénommée Yango. L’artiste musicien Jupiter va jouer au concert d’ouverture de la biennale, le jeudi 20 novembre à 19 heures, à l’issue de son vernissage sur invitation au Musée d’Art contemporain et multimédia à l’Echangeur dans la commune de Limite à Kinshasa. Il ne sera pas le seul à l’affiche les artistes Strobondo et Huguette seront de la partie aussi.

Biennale YANGO
Afin d’encourager les artistes congolais, et en particuliers les jeunes créateurs, la Délégation de l’Union européenne en RDC, décernera un prix dans le cadre de la Biennale d’art contemporain « Yango ». Ce « Prix spécial de l’Union européenne » est doté d’une somme 2.000 euros. Il marque un premier pas pour un engagement plus fort dans l’avenir. Sur le thème de la biennale 2014, « Avancer », chaque artiste, partant de sa réalité personnelle, questionnera et inventera un Congo qui avance…
Le prix sera attribué par un jury composé de cinq personnes, artistes et personnalités de l’UE et sera remis au lauréat lors d’une cérémonie publique pendant la Biennale.

It’s been a wonderful few months working hard in preparation for the 1st edition of Yango biennale. One can’t imagine what a challenge it was to realize a project of this scale in Kinshasa at a time when the world was panicking about Ebola.
Despite the many challenges which created fear to travel for some – Yango biennale was a huge success. It included the giving of 16 artist in residency prizes worth 80.000 euros that will enable more cross-cultural exchange within the continent. I therefore would like to thank the artists for their commitment in making the 1st edition of Yango biennale possible and our partners for their support.

For this, I’m working for about 3 weeks on a large installation/sculpture, called Valeur Reelle, just outside the main building of the “Ecole des Beaux Art” right in the center of Kinshasa.
The exhibition, which is curated by Sithabile Mlotshwa, will open on the 2ost. of November 2014.
About 25 renowed artists from all over the world will take part in the biennial.
Together with a team of local artists and students I will work on the outdoor piece.The work will deal partially with the huge ecological resources of Congo, the fact that large amounts of the population from Kinshasa moved from the countryside to the city and a possible new currency/bankingsystem I’m proposing with the work.

Du 21 novembre au 19 décembre 2014, se tiendra la première édition de la Biennale « Yango ». Plus de 35 artistes sont attendus en provenance d’une vingtaine de pays d’Afrique, d’Europe, mais aussi d’Asie et des Etats-Unis. « Yango », la dénomination de la première Biennale de l’art contemporain de Kinshasa, fixée du 23 novembre au 19 décembre 2014. Fête de l’art placée sous le thème : «Avancer».
Environ 25 artistes d’Asie, d’Europe, des Caraïbes et d’Afrique sont attendus à cette fête. Certains séjournent déjà dans la capitale congolaise pour assister à cette rencontre.
Divers sites notamment à l’Académie des beaux arts, Centre Wallonie Bruxelles, l’Institut français et l’Echangeur de Limete, accueilleront cette fête par des expositions, ateliers, performances, conférences débats, et spectacles de musique.

Une innovation dans le monde artistique congolais. Pour la première fois, Kinshasa va vibrer sous le rythme de » la biennale d’art contemporain » qui s’ouvre ce dimanche 23 novembre 2014 dans les différents sites de la capitale du pays. Cette première Biennale d’art contemporain est une fête de l’art permettant aux artistes évoluant dans différents domaines de présenter généralement des objets d’art et se caractérisent par l’éclectisme des représentations nationales qui y participent.

Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, held it’s first contemporary art biennale on November 21- December 19 in 2014. In the spirit of the biennale which take place in Dakar and Kampala, Kinshasa show-cased thirty-five artists from all continents and twenty Congolese artists, including it’s acclaimed artists Freddy Tsimba and Kura Shomali. The biennale was organized around the theme “Yango” means ‘Forward’ in lingala, and sought to explore aspects of Congolese representation, as well as urban space and globalization.

Rob Voerman: Yango
Rob Voerman (1966) werkt in verschillende media: sculptuur, installatiekunst, grafiek, schilderkunst en fotografie. Zijn werk is veelvuldig getoond in Europa en de VS en werk bevind zich in verschillende private- en publieke kunstcollecties waaronder MoMa, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam en Hammer Museum. Zijn werk wordt vertegenwoordigd door Upstream Gallery in Amsterdam.

Yango Biennale (2014)
Yango Biennale is currently the last African biennial of contemporary art, inaugurated last year in Kinshasa. The first edition entitled “Go Forward” questioned the relationship between art and urban space in Congo-Kinshasa, especially the attitude of worldwide artists using their creativity to reflect on the reality of the continent. With almost forty artists from around the world, half of which are Congolese, the event finally did justice to a burgeoning art scene. Without galleries or museums to showcase their art, local artists are often better known abroad than at home. Six exhibitions venues in Kinshasa paid tribute to the Congolese visual art and gave a different image of the city, frequently associated with war, misery, and poverty.
